The Best Time to Book Your Maternity Session

Whether this is your first baby or your fifth, timing your maternity shoot just right can make all the difference in how you look and feel in front of the camera.

Let’s talk about the ideal time to schedule your maternity photos, what to expect from the process, and how to plan for seasonal magic, Southern Ontario style.

The Best Time to Take Maternity Photos

Most maternity photographers, myself included, recommend scheduling your maternity photos between 28 and 34 weeks into your pregnancy.

At this point:

  • Your bump is beautifully round and camera-ready
  • You're still comfortable enough to move and pose naturally
  • It’s often early enough to avoid any last-minute surprises if baby decides to show up early

This sweet spot gives you those glowing, confident images without the added discomfort of late third-trimester aches.

When to Book Your Maternity Photographer

I always advise clients to book their maternity session between 12 and 20 weeks pregnant. This gives you first pick for dates, the chance to plan wardrobe and locations, and one less thing to worry about later on.

Trust me, booking dates, especially weekends, can fill up fast, even more so during peak seasons like fall.

Early booking = way less stress.

Southern Ontario Seasons and What They Mean for Your Photos

Our Ontario weather has big personality. Here’s how the season you book in can shape the vibe of your maternity session:

  • (Late) Spring Maternity Photos
  • Think blossoms, soft pastels, and fresh light. Ideal for dreamy outdoor sessions with a romantic feel.
  • Summer Maternity Sessions
  • Golden hour fields, bare feet, and flowy dresses. We’ll avoid the midday heat and chase that soft evening glow.
  • Fall Maternity Photos
  • Everyone’s fave for a reason. Vibrant leaves, cozy sweaters, and the most stunning natural backdrops
  • Winter Maternity Photography
  • Snowy, minimal, and elegant. Winter sessions are stunning and unique, especially if you’re open to layering up and embracing the chill.

If you’re eyeing a specific aesthetic (hello pampas grass at sunset or moody evergreens in the snow), it’s best to reach out early so we can plan accordingly.

Why Maternity Photography Matters

You’re growing a human, and that deserves to be documented with care and intention. Your maternity session isn’t just about taking pretty pictures, it’s about pausing in the middle of all the planning and prepping to celebrate this exact moment. You, your body, your baby, and your story.

We can keep it intimate and simple in my studio on Rest Acres Road, or head outdoors for something more adventurous. Either way, it’s about documenting the beauty of becoming a mother.
